SIX SIGMA SPORTS

crypto sports betting platform that
allows users to act as the house in various markets

Background

MY ROLE

I joined the project as the sole designer after the platform had already been launched, with the primary responsibility of redesigning it with a focus on improving the user experience.
The main phases of my work included: Identifying and Understanding Current Issues, User Research and Testing, Competitor Research and Best Practices, Wireframing and UI Design, Prototyping and Further Testing.

FIRST STEPS

My first objective was to get familiar with the platform’s existing design and functionality. I conducted interviews with key stakeholders, developers, and users to gain a deeper understanding of the app and the challenges its users were experiencing. Through this research, I identified three major UX issues to focus on for the redesign.

Identified UX Issues

1
Diverse User Groups and Onboarding Challenges

The app’s user base consisted of two distinct groups: those familiar with sports betting but new to cryptocurrency and those experienced in crypto but unfamiliar with sports betting. This gap created onboarding challenges, as the first group lacked the knowledge to complete the unique onboarding requirements needed in order to use the app. Additionally, the app’s interface needed to accommodate both without overwhelming either side, ensuring that all users could navigate the app intuitively from the start.

2
Unclear Showcase of Unique Feature

The app’s unique feature, allowing users to act as the house in various markets, was somewhat hidden, located on a separate home page. Users had to leave the main interface to access it, which made it challenging for them to fully engage with this core offering. This setup led to lower visibility and made it harder for users to recognize the feature as a central part of the platform.

3
Complex Navigation Structure

The app’s navigation was divided into two separate sections due to the unique feature setup, which sometimes caused confusion. With two distinct menus and parallel pages, users found it challenging to locate information and understand which navigation was linked to each feature. This layout wasn’t as intuitive as it could be, impacting the overall user experience.

USER PERSONAS

Based on my overall understanding of the product and insights from user research, I developed two user personas to guide future UX decisions and ensure the design met the needs of our key user groups.

Competitor Research

To base my redesign in industry standards, I conducted a thorough competitor analysis. Given the dual nature of the app, this research involved exploring both sports betting platforms and crypto/web3 platforms.
This cross-industry approach allowed me to identify best practices from both fields, which was essential since our core flows combined elements of both industries. The analysis included:

  • Examining the top 10 relevant sports betting competitors and their user flows

  • Researching best practices for the platform’s web3 features

  • Integrating findings into comprehensive user journey flows

    WIREFRAMING

Following the creation of wireframes based on all the gathered information, I incorporated multiple feedback loops with stakeholders to refine and validate the design. Additionally, I conducted user testing to assess the understandability and usability of the design, making further refinements based on the feedback received.

    UI DESIGN

The next phase involved defining a new design system that aligned with the branding updates. This phase focused on refining the visual aspects of the application to ensure it was aesthetically appealing for sports betting and crypto users.

    TAKEAWAY

This project significantly enhanced my UX research skills, as I was tasked with navigating two unfamiliar fields—sports betting and cryptocurrency. To effectively design for the platform, I first immersed myself in learning how sports betting works and familiarized myself with crypto concepts. This foundational knowledge allowed me to conduct more insightful user interviews and gain a deeper understanding of the needs and pain points of both user groups. By blending these two areas, I was able to create a design that catered to both audiences, improving my research and problem-solving abilities.
